Dzaleka Refugee Camp
The Dzaleka refugee camp is home to over 52,000 individuals out of which 45% are women. The camp already faces challenges as health services, water, shelter and sanitation facilities are inadequate to serve the existing population. Through Devota, a refugee who has been living in the camp for over 20 years and our partners Ufulu, we are able to educate and distribute menstrual cups to the women in the refugee camp. Menstrual cups have the potential to radically change the lives of these women.
School girls
Many girls (and most of the older women) that we have spoken to admit that they regularly missed school when they have their periods. If a girl is using cloth rags as her only means of sanitary protection, she will live with the constant fear of her rags leaking, smelling and staining her uniform. The simplest way to avoid this is by just not going to school.
Malawi already has a huge problem with girls not attending school, for many different reasons. Having your period should not be one of them.
